Toque was formed in 2012 when four acclaimed Canadian musicians (Todd Kerns, Brent Fitz, Shane Gaalaas, and Cory Churko) came together at a cancer charity event in Winnipeg. What started as a one-off cover gig turned into a full-time celebration of Canadian rock.
“It initially started with these charity shows. We could play anything... Led Zeppelin, ACDC, whatever. But for whatever reason, we just decided, wouldn’t it be fun to have a bunch of Canadian guys play the songs we grew up on?” says lead singer of Toque, Todd Kerns.
The band released their debut album Give’R in 2016, featuring Canadian rock classics, followed by Never Enough in 2019. This album introduced their first original track, "Never Enough For You," now a staple at every show and is one of Toque's greatest contributions to the story of rock & roll in Canada.
"Never Enough For You," that we put out a few years ago, that gets a really huge reaction. It’s a different kind of rewarding because it’s our song.”
Although Kerns has played across Canada, Sun Peaks will be a first and he’s excited to take it all in!
“I’ve been playing in Canada for 1000 years,” he jokes. “We've played in Kamloops before, yes. But Sun Peaks—I don’t think so.”
“I’m told it’s breathtaking, so I’m looking forward to that... there’s something to be said about being in a really beautiful location that can add to the entire "exhilarance" of the event,” he says. “There’s nothing stranger than playing a rock & roll show and looking around like, wow, how did they allow us to do this?”
Sun Peaks is well known in Canada as the second-largest ski resort in the country, but summer in Sun Peaks has a natural beauty all its own. Canada Day concert goers can bask in the beauty of a BC summer evening—camp chairs and all—while enjoying an amazing concert experience at a world-class open air venue, the Sun Peaks Centre Stage.
Toque’s setlist is steeped in Canadian rock tradition, featuring hits from Streetheart, Harlequin, Rush, and more. While their original music is growing, they plan to lean into the classics for this special day.
“Toque from the ground up has been formed around the idea of four Canadian guys who who grew up on classic Canadian rock and were obsessed with it... Specifically on Canada Day, I think we will lean very heavily into that.”
Whether you're a Canadian rock fanatic or just being introduced to these tunes, you and your Canada Day crew are guaranteed to have fun at this show.
“Canadian Rock & Roll is a big part of our DNA, so what better way to celebrate that than Canada Day? And more so, in Sun Peaks.”
For Kerns, Canadian bands like Streetheart, Queen City Kids, and Loverboy were just as formative as The Rolling Stones and AC/DC.
“Those were sort of the touchstones—you know, the Rolling Stones are from London, England, but those guys were from right there. I’m from small town Saskatchewan. I never thought I’d even get to Toronto, and suddenly I’m in all these places... it’s surreal."
From Saskatchewan to stadiums in Mumbai, where he played with Slash as thousands sang along to "Sweet Child O’ Mine," Kerns remains deeply grounded in his Canadian roots.
“There was a moment on stage with Slash... there’s a video of the entire audience singing louder than we could even play.”
When asked what defines Canadian rock, Kerns points to its upbeat nature:
“Canadian music is so vast. I think there is an overall sort of positivity to the music that we’re playing. In general, we seem to be focusing on a time that the songs were more about a fun time and a good time.”
And there’s more to come. Toque’s latest original single, "Fighter", is on the way just in time to soundtrack their summer tour.
“We have a new single coming out called Fighter, it’s a pretty big deal for us. Whenever we’re getting ready to do a leg of dates throughout the summer, we always try to have a single to sort of carry us through.”
If you're looking for the perfect way to celebrate Canada Day, this is it. Picture mountains, live music, and nothing but good vibes in true Canadian fashion.
“It sort of elevates your passion and love for your country when you have to experience it from afar,” says Kerns.
“Canada is one of the greatest places on the planet, so being able to celebrate Canada Day here—specifically Sun Peaks—and playing Canadian music, feels like it’s all kind of coming together.”
